Binder Facts
Some Binder Facts:
The Default Scrivener Icons can provide information about whether they contain text, a synopsis, or a snapshot, but custom icons will not display any of this information about a synopsis, text, or a snapshot.
There are seven possible ways to add files or folders to the Binder.
Note if you accidentally enter Scriptwriting Mode, then when you leave a newly created file, the icon will be yellow in the Binder. You can leave this mode by using the Keyboard Shortcut Ctrl + 8, or by using the Menu command Format > Scriptwriting again. Note a black box message will appear to state you are back in Standard Text Mode.
You can restore the Binder view to display the Draft folder or Manuscript view with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + R.
Media files, web pages, PDFs, and Image files can only be imported directly into the Research folder.
Merely sending documents to the Trash folder does not delete them.
However, using the Empty Trash option will permanently delete files and cannot be reversed.
Your Draft/Manuscript can have its name edited to be anything you want.
You can add directional arrows to the toolbar to help move documents around in the Binder hierarchy and up and down in the Binder. Or add Toolbar Icons to expand or collapse the Binder at once.
The Menu command Navigate > Binder Selection Affects will change how clicking on a Binder document will open it in the Editor.
You can add blank documents and folders from either the Main Toolbar, the Binder Footer, or the right click menu options on any Binder document.
The Group View Modes only work when multiple documents have been selected or a folder/subdocument which contains multiple files is chosen.
You can alphabetically sort documents and folders inside a folder, BUT this action is not reversible. Consider taking a screen capture image of the folder before doing this if you might want to reverse this process. You could use the screenshot to manually rearrange the documents to their previous order.
You can select and move multiple documents at once.
You can also duplicate multiple items at once.
The Reveal in Binder option will show any document(s) or folder’s location in Scrivener’s Binder and can be reached many ways. You can also do this for multiple documents at once such as might be in a Collection.
The Binder can be hidden via Menu commands (View > Binder) or via the View Icon in the toolbar. (Which is included by default in the Main Toolbar by Scrivener.)
Appearance options in the Option Panel can change Binder Fonts and size as well as change the Binder Background.
Hoisting the Binder allows you to zoom in on one container (a folder or a document with subdocuments) at a time. Use the Menu command View > Outline > Hoist Binder and exit by clicking the X in the header of this view.
The Options in the Options panel under Behaviors > Folders and Files will affect whether folder text is displayed in various scenarios.
The Alt key- Holding the Alt key while clicking a caret to expand a folder/document with subdocuments will open either in a fully expanded view, which will show all subfolders and files inside at once. Using this method again will close the folder.
Holding the Ctrl key while or after clicking the right click option on any Binder item adds the right click option of Reveal File Location. This will show the current location of the Binder document in the Windows Explorer that holds the RTF information for this file.
